In Memoriam: Taylor Momsen's Acting Career

No one wants their funeral celebrated on an inconsequential Tuesday afternoon, but Taylor Momsen’s acting career will have to settle for an overheated, late-summer burial. The Gossip Girl alumna claims she’s done acting and wants to focus solely on her music career. To be fair, Pretty Reckless is kind of a cool band. But to be fairer to the Movieline populace, this means we have to mourn her body of work. Join us as we recount a bunch of movies you probably didn’t even know Ms. Momsen was in. The Grinch (2000) Yes, that was Momsen as Cindy Lou Who in the disappointing big screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s magical tale. While the makeup and hair in this movie are nothing short of astounding, the only other noteworthy moment is Momsen’s sad performance of “Where are You, Christmas,” embedded below in full audio. You might say it saves the movie from being a three-decker sauerkraut and toadstool sandwich with arsenic sauce. We Were Soldiers (2002) Though now it appears her adoptive parents are Madonna and Lourdes Ciccone, in 2002 Momsen served as a daughter to Mel Gibson and Madeleine Stowe in We Were Soldiers, the tastefully executed movie chronicling the first major battle of the Vietnam War and the life of a soldier therein. If you can stand to look at Mel Gibson, you’ll likely appreciate this movie. Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (2002) Momsen played the President of the United States’s daughter in Spy Kids 2, and if you guessed that she’d be trapped atop an out-of-control carnival ride at the start of the movie, you’re the smartest spy kid of all. Say what you will about the green-screen schlock of the movie, but Momsen’s clearly the best actor in this sequence. Paranoid Park (2007) In Gus Van Sant’s largely overlooked but lauded tale of a young skateboarder (Gabe Nevins) who accidentally kills a security guard, Momsen plays that teen’s girlfriend, a well-braided cheerleader who he treats with ambivalence. She appears in the following clip at 1:20. Now you can say you know about the Taylor Momsen film that was nominated for Cannes’s Palme d’Or. Underdog (2007) Ohhhhhh, yes. Gotta love an instantly forgettable big-screen remake of a totally outdated cartoon. In this (unfortunately blurred) clip, we watch Momsen as “Molly the news reporter” introduce her pooch Polly (voiced by Amy Adams) to the titular talking pooch. Wally Cox is rolling in his grave! Or the converted Hollywood Squares box he calls a grave! Taylor Momsen quits acting… [LAT]

Orson Welles Was Not Impressed With Jean-Luc Godard

Today in iconic filmmakers backhanding other iconic filmmakers, this quote from Orson Welles about Jean-Luc Godard: “His gifts as a director are enormous. I just can’t take him very seriously as a thinker — and that’s where we seem to differ, because he does. His message is what he cares about these days, and, like most movie messages, it could be written on the head of a pin.” Burn. To be fair, Welles was a lot nicer than David Cronenberg was about M. Night Shyamalan. “I HATE that guy!” Flavorwire has 28 other directors-hating-directors quotes for you to enjoy. [Flavorwire]

'The Glee Project': Season 2 'Talks Have Begun'

Oxygen"The Glee Project" While Oxygen's The Glee Project has not officially been picked up for a second season, executive producer Michael Davies is confident the reality competition series will return. "Talks have begun," Davies said Tuesday during the series' stop at the summer Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. "A lot of the planning is starting to happen, how we're going to do the casting process, which is the biggest thing." Davies pointed out the Glee Project's ratings growth since its weak June premiere opposite the Tony Awards and its strong online fan base as a big part of why it's likely to get the second season pickup. STORY: 'The Glee Project's' Weak Premiere Ratings Leave Oxygen Execs Perplexed "We're up more than 100 percent in most of the key demos from when we launched to where we are now," he said, noting that Oxygen.com this week broke its single-day ratings record with more than 100,000 uniques heading directly for The Glee Project's part of the site. "I feel incredibly confident that we're coming back," Davies said of the series whose winner will receive a seven-episode arc on Fox's Glee. "This is certainly in my plans for next year." TV REVIEW: 'The Glee Project' Choreographer Zach Woodlee, who mentors the contestants on the weekly series alongside casting director Robert Ulrich, told The Hollywood Reporter that wouldn't change a thing should the series be renewed, including adding an audience participation element similar to other reality-competition shows like American Idol. STORY: 'Glee Project' Winner May Not be the Only One Heading to Fox Hit "The point of the show, it's not a popularity contest," Woodlee said. "It really is someone that they can write a character for. That's not something that Glee is really about. A lot of new characters who come on either get negative response or positive response and it's just a part of the show. I don't think that making it a popularity contest with America would be the right choice." Ulrich agreed and noted the Glee Project's similarity to how Glee's casting process works. STORY: Amy Winehouse Joke Edited on 'Glee Project' "I selfishly like it this way because it's more like the way show business is," Ulrich noted. "This is about ending up casting somebody on a television series. This isn't just winning a prize. Ultimately, what really matters is what Ryan [Murphy] thinks. It's not your typical thing. I can't imagine it ever going with a live audience thing."
